Welcome to our directory of 78 quartzites. We have listed the colours as follows:

Quartzite Petrology

Quartzite is sandstone that has been metamorphosed. Sandstone is an arenaceous sedimentary rock composed mainly of feldspar and quartz and varies in colour. Neither are an igneous rock and should not be designated a granite.

Unlike sandstones, quartzites are free from pores and have a smooth fracture; when struck, they break through, not around, the sand grains, producing a smooth surface instead of a rough and granular one. Many quartzites are highly polishable, extremely durable and often described as "exotic".

Most quartzites contain 90% or more quartz, but some contain 99% and are the largest and purest concentrations of silica in the Earth's crust.

Quartzites should not be confused with man-made quartz, an engineered stone, which is generally 93-95% crushed natural rocks mixed with 5-7% of polymer resin as a binding agent.
