Description: Impala Black granite is a light/medium/dark grey gabbro/norite of the Precambrian period. This stone internationally may be nominated as a granite but in the area of application of the European Standard this stone must be nominated as a gabbro. During the polishing process a clear epoxy resin filler may be used to fill any micro fissures or tiny pitting however this does not affect the integrity of the stone, it merely provides an even smoother surface finish. Impala Black Granite is suitable for both interior and exterior use futhermore is frost resistant and with a constant polish.

There are principally three selections of Impala Black Granite as shown here, left to right, light, medium and dark. This is a very popular granite and a small sample of the selected Impala Black granite shade should be representative of the whole slab however swatch samples must be approved for large projects to ensure that the blocks are all extracted from the same quarry face for matching purposes.

Products: Suitable for construction projects both commercial and domestic, prefabricated countertops/worktops, vanities, tiles, backsplashes, paving, fireplaces and memorials.

Surface Finish: Impala Black Granite looks best with a gloss polished surface but is also available as honed, leather/satin, river-washed/antique, thermal/flamed, brushed and sandblast finish.

Sealing: Test with a small sample. It is possible that a sealant can be used on Impala Black granite however excessive attempts at sealing it could actually create a residue film build-up.

Block Sizes: These are quarries yielding selectable, grades of granite with blocks suitable for gangsaw size down to economical tile-sized blocks. For commercial projects it is important to ensure that blocks are selected from the same quarry face.

Rough blocks are usually exported by Break Bulk however intermodal containerisation is available at extra cost. Finished products are packed into sea-worthy wooden crates and loaded into containers.

Quarry Location: Impala Black granite is quarried in the Bosspruit region, Rustenburg, Northwest, South Africa. There are several quarries in the Bosspruit region, available are Impala Light, Impala Medium and Impala Dark. Quarried since the mid 1940s.

Gabbro: Any of several medium or coarse-grained intrusive igneous rocks that consist primarily of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. Essentially, gabbro is the intrusive (plutonic) equivalent of basalt, but whereas basalt is often remarkably homogeneous in mineralogy and composition, gabbros are exceedingly variable. Gabbros are found widely on the Earth and on the Moon as well.

Norite: A mafic intrusive igneous rock composed largely of the calcium-rich plagioclase labradorite and hypersthene with olivine. Norite is essentially indistinguishable from gabbro without thin section study under the petrographic microscope. The principal difference between norite and gabbro, however, is the type of pyroxene of which it is composed; norite is predominately composed of orthopyroxenes, largely high magnesian enstatites, whereas the principal pyroxenes in gabbro are clinopyroxenes, generally medially iron-rich augites.

Mineral Composition: Average by % Feldspar, pyroxene, hornblende, quartz, predominant are dark minerals.
