Description: Ebony Black granite / Boalt Standard / Gylsboda Black / SS Black is a fine-grained black diabase of the Precambrian period quarried near Gylsboda, Sweden. This stone internationally may be nominated as a granite but in the area of application of the European Standard this stone must be nominated as a basalt. A small sample of Ebony Black granite is usually representative not having a wide variation in colour and veining however swatch samples must be approved for large projects to ensure that the blocks are all extracted from the same quarry face for matching purposes. During the polishing process a clear epoxy resin filler may be used to fill any micro fissures or tiny pitting however this does not affect the integrity of the stone, it merely provides an even smoother surface finish. Ebony Black Granite is suitable for both interior and exterior use futhermore is frost resistant and with a constant polish. Surface Finish: Ebony Black Granite looks best with a gloss polished surface but is also available as honed, leather/satin, river-washed/antique, thermal/flamed, brushed and sandblast finish. Sealing: Test with a small sample. It is most unlikely that a sealant can be used on Ebony Black granite and excessive attempts at sealing it could actually create a residue film build-up. Block Sizes: This is a quarry yielding selectable, grades of granite with blocks suitable for gangsaw size down to economical tile-sized blocks. For commercial projects it is important to ensure that blocks are selected from the same quarry face. Rough blocks are usually exported by Break Bulk however intermodal containerisation is available at extra cost. Finished products are packed into sea-worthy wooden crates and loaded into containers. Synonyms: Boalt Standard, Gylsboda Black, Gylsboda Basalt, Swedish Ebony Black Basalt: An extrusive igneous (volcanic) rock that is low in silica content, dark in colour, and comparatively rich in iron and magnesium. Some basalts are quite glassy (tachylytes), and many are very fine-grained and compact. It is more usual, however, for them to exhibit porphyritic structure, with larger crystals (phenocrysts) of olivine, augite, or feldspar in a finely crystalline matrix (groundmass). Olivine and augite are the most common porphyritic minerals in basalts; porphyritic plagioclase feldspars are also found. Basaltic lavas are frequently spongy or pumiceous; the steam cavities become filled with secondary minerals such as calcite, chlorite, and zeolites.
Basalts may be broadly classified on a chemical and petrographic basis into two main groups: the tholeiitic and the alkali basalts. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are characterized by calcic plagioclase with augite, pigeonite or hypersthene, and olivine (rarely) as the dominant mafic minerals; basalts without olivine are also well represented. Tholeiitic basalts, which contain 45 to 63 percent silica, are rich in iron and include the tholeiites (basalts with calcium-poor pyroxene).
