Description: Blue Pearl granite is a Commercial name for several different varieties of a coarse-grained blue, iridescent monzonite (larvikite) of the Permian period. This stone internationally may be nominated as a granite but in the area of application of the European Standard this stone must be nominated as a monzonite. A small sample is usually representative of the whole slab not having a wide variation in colour and veining however see below since there are about 30 quarries. During the polishing process a clear epoxy resin filler may be used to fill any micro fissures or tiny pitting however this does not affect the integrity of the stone, it merely provides an even smoother surface finish. Blue Pearl granite is suitable for both interior and exterior use futhermore is frost resistant and with a constant polish.
Two different images are shown above, on the left traditional Blue Pearl and in the middle the much more expensive and darker Blue Pearl GT. On the right are Blue Pearl countertops produced in China.
Products: Suitable for construction projects both commercial and domestic, prefabricated countertops/worktops, vanities, tiles, backsplashes, paving, fireplaces and memorials.

Surface Finish: Blue Pearl granite looks best with a gloss polished surface but is also available as honed, leather/satin, river-washed/antique, thermal/flamed, brushed and sandblast finish.
Sealing: Test with a small sample. It is possible that a sealant can be used on Blue Pearl granite however excessive attempts at sealing it could actually create a residue film build-up.
Block Sizes: There are about 30 different Blue Pearl granite quarries with differing colour selections and quality types. For commercial projects it is important to ensure that blocks are selected from the same quarry face.
Rough blocks are usually exported by Break Bulk however intermodal containerisation is available at extra cost. Finished products are packed into sea-worthy wooden crates and loaded into containers.
Quarry Location: Blue Pearl granite is quarried near Tvedalen, Vestfold, Norway due west of Larvik.

Monzonite: Monzonite is a plutonic igneous rock intermediate in composition between syenite and diorite. An intrusive igneous rock that contains abundant and approximately equal amounts of plagioclase and potash feldspar, it also contains subordinate amounts of biotite and hornblende and sometimes minor quantities of orthopyroxene. Quartz, nepheline, and olivine, which are occasionally present, produce quartz, nepheline, and olivene monzonites. Monzonite is not a rare rock type, but it generally occurs in rather small, heterogeneous masses associated with (and perhaps gradational to) diorites, pyroxenites, or gabbros.
