Description: Black Galaxy Granite is a fine to medium-grained, black gabbric anorthosite of the Precambrian period with golden-yellow sparkling broncite scales. This stone internationally may be nominated as a granite but in the area of application of the European Standard this stone must be nominated as a gabbro. The veining and colour can vary considerably and a small sample of Black Galaxy granite may not be representative of the whole slab therefore swatch samples must be approved for large projects to ensure that the blocks are all extracted from the same quarry face for matching purposes. During the polishing process a clear epoxy resin filler may be used to fill any micro fissures or tiny pitting however this does not affect the integrity of the stone, it merely provides an even smoother surface finish. Black Galaxy granite is suitable for both interior and exterior use futhermore is frost resistant and with a constant polish.

Surface Finish: Black Galaxy granite looks best with a gloss polished surface but is also available as honed, leather/satin, river-washed/antique, thermal/flamed, brushed and sandblast finish. We never use colour enhancers.
Sealing: Test with a small sample. It is most unlikely that a sealant can be used on Black Galaxy granite due to the very tight grain formation, attempts at sealing it could actually create a residue film build-up.
Block Sizes: This is a large black granite quarry with current production at the lower levels of a 120 metre high hill. Granite blocks suitable for gangsaw size down to economical tile-sized and monument blocks are available however there is always a big demand for these blocks therefore for larger projects it is extremely important to give us considerable advanced notice. Extraction commenced in the very early 80s. For commercial projects it is important to ensure that blocks are selected from the same quarry face, do not try and match-up with alternative black granite sources.
Rough blocks are usually exported by Break Bulk however intermodal containerisation is available at extra cost. Finished products are packed into sea-worthy wooden crates and loaded into containers.
Quarry Location: Black Galaxy granite is from our own sheet bedrock quarry Cheemakurti, Bodawada, Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh, Southern India

Anorthosite: A Precambrian, phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by a predominance of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar (90-100%), and a minimal mafic component (0-10%). Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine are the mafic minerals most commonly present. All anorthosites found on Earth consist of coarse crystals but some samples of the rock taken from the Moon are finely crystalline.
Gabbro: A dark-coloured, coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock. Gabbro is very similar to basalt in its mineral make up. It is composed mostly of the mineral plagioclase feldspar with smaller amounts of pyroxene and olivine. Gabbros are found widely on the Earth and on the Moon as well.
